The evidence is just too conflicting.
I spray EOs as an antihistamine at home, to clear up my nose and they work (almost any kind, interestingly). So I love that and they sure smell nice and make good natural perfumes.
But I have tried frankincense EO for joint aches and it did absolutely nothing. Not to mention that I spilled a lot on my skin (for such an extraordinary price of $30 for a full tablespoon that goes in a bottle, thsnk goodness it was a gift) . It's also very un-ecofriendly. Then I took 2 capsules of that same frankincense and voila, inflammation gone. And no destruction of ecosystems for a price of merely a few cents for a capsule.
So all in all, use aromatherapy for breathing and whole herbh for internal use , it only makes sense that way.

In reply to <a href="https://www.dietvsdisease.org/do-essential-oils-work/#comment-90034">Amy</a>.

Hello! I am 7 months late but I have to say, I have not heard something quite stupid! Frankly, the stupidity released in this 3 paragraph comment is unlike any other, to be so wrong and misinformed is quite a feat, so I must applaud you for that.

Prescription drugs undergo rigorous safety standards because they can't really get away with the vague wording you find many snake oil companies using. Plus, they are advertised as things that actually work, not that you'd know about things that are advertised to work. Now lets get into the LONG list of side effects with ingesting essential oils,
Anise.
When taken internally, anise lowers the antidepressant effects of some medications and increases the effects of drugs that affect the central nervous system.
Bergamot.
This oil can cause skin sensitivity and result in burning if applied topically in a high concentration before sunlight exposure.
Cinnamon.
If applied without diluting or ingested, this oil can cause mucous membrane irritation, contact dermatitis, facial flushing, double vision, nausea, and vomiting.
Eucalyptus.
If swallowed, this oil can cause seizures.
Lavender.
Topical application has been shown to affect hormones in prepubescent boys.
Lemon verbena.
If topically applied before sun exposure, this oil can cause photosensitivity and may result in burning.
Nutmeg.
This oil may cause a rash or a burn if applied topically. It can also cause hallucinations and even coma when ingested in high concentrations.
Peppermint.
This oil can cause rash and other irritation when applied to skin. It can also cause heartburn if taken internally.
Sage.
If a large amount in ingested, this oil can cause restlessness, vomiting, vertigo, rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, and kidney damage.
Tea tree.
When applied topically, it can cause rash or irritation. If swallowed, it can cause loss of muscle coordination and confusion. Ingestion may also affect hormones in prepubescent boys.

Now addressing your second point, the difference between doctors and middle aged mothers feeding their children snake oils is that doctors have YEARS of training, get fired and thrown in jail for misinformation, and some may choose to study specific branches of medical science, because we're complex. Middle aged mothers that peddle this pseudo-scientific nonsense get all their knowledge off of companies that AREN'T regulated and can even get away with making bullshit 'tests' to put their snake oils under and Facebook. This results in many needless stupid symptoms, misinformation and, in some cases, death.

Essential oils are for a quick treatment, not a cure, never rely on them, trust your doctor over these snake oil distributors. :)

Two paragraphs struck me. 1; While prescription drugs must undergo rigorous safety and effectiveness testing before being approved, essential oils are automatically classified as safe.....
And yet, every approved drug comes with an amazingly long list of side affects, some severe, some deadly. 'Approved drugs are often recalled, discontinued, and drug companies are sued on a daily basis. Wrongful death being not an uncommon claim. Don't get me started about statins, yet they are handed out like candy.
2; this is to be expected,... almost everyone who recommends them gets a commission.
This one blew me away, since Doctors who prescribe medications receive massive perks from the drug companies, the sales people who recommended the drugs to the doctors make huge commissions, and let's not forget 'big pharma'.
Some drugs work for some people, some do not. Alternative therapies, like EO, Chinese medicine, etc. (Which have been used effectively for millenia), work for some and not for others.
