A very nice summary of studies, current knowledge and practice. It also corresponds very well with my reading, research, and personal practice as a patient with Crohn's for 50 years. I was particularly impressed by the author's diligence getting into little-known research such as the butyrate study, 24 in the footnotes. Supplements and diet have kept me in remission since my last surgery 10 yrs ago, when my GI doc recommended Remicade (or similar). I replied "no thanks" and starting my research program.

One thing I was surprised was left out is gluten free diets. There is some research to recommend them

Although this page was not devoted to therapeutic options, as many Crohn's sufferers will surely read this looking for alternative modalities for their conditions, I would also like to mention helminthic therapy, and fecal transplants, both of which have helped many patients.

A website I helped start for helminthic therapy, although I no longer use the therapy.

Wonderful summary for the limited evidence we have right now. I am a dietitian and yes feel the Fodmap diet is best science we have right now for helping folks. Probiotics and turmeric are important supplements.

Thank you so much for this article Joe. My kid who is 20 years old was just diagnosed. We have had 4 ER visits and 2 hospitalizations over the past 6 weeks. I am a medical professional and am doing lots of reading. Your summary is exactly what I needed to give me direction for my research. Thank you!!!

Thank you for this. I was diagnosed with Crohn's years ago, have had a small bowel resection, but, while I may be considered in remission and only a mild to moderate case, I continue to struggle with most foods causing discomfort daily and also resulting in chronic inflammation and constipation. This confirms that there's not much data regarding my somewhat unusual symptoms in bowel habits and why I still feel at such a loss. I'm not sure Crohn's is my only problem. ?
